Unlocking Transformer Health: The Comprehensive Approach of TCA®

When a transformer fails, the costs—both direct and indirect—can be enormous. In North and South America, data over the past decade shows thousands of transformer failures among tens of thousands of units, with failure rates varying by voltage class, age, and operational stresses. That’s why a condition‐based maintenance (CBM), supported by deep diagnostics, is essential.

At TJ|H2b, our Transformer Condition Assessment, TCA®, is a proprietary diagnostic program designed to deliver precise, actionable insight into transformer health. Rather than relying on time‐based or reactive maintenance, the TCA® approach gives utilities and industrial users a way to monitor true condition, trend deterioration, and plan interventions before failures occur.

What is TCA® Diagnostic Testing & What Does it Cover?

With over 25 years of expertise, TJ|H2b are pioneers in the development and application of condition-based maintenance (CBM) programs, serving electric utilities, industrial high-voltage power suppliers, and service companies.

Our Transformer Condition Assessment (TCA®) program is more than simply oil sampling:

1. Comprehensive Test Suite

TCA® includes multiple diagnostic parameters:

  • Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) for detecting thermal, electrical, or arcing faults.
  • Insulating fluid quality assessments (moisture, acidity, dielectric strength, breakdown voltage, etc.).
  • Particle analysis to detect fine particle contamination that may indicate internal wear or mechanical issues.
  • Furan analysis (assessing paper insulation aging) and degree of polymerization, which help estimate the remaining life of internal insulation.
  • Diagnostic evaluation that integrates these test results, trends, and equipment type and history.

2. Proprietary Condition Coding & Trends

Each piece of equipment is given a condition code (1-4 or 4*) based on the degree of fault activity or oil degradation.

Trend analysis is critical — examining how parameters change over time enables early detection of emerging problems. TCA® is built for that.

3. Purely Diagnostic Testing

TJ|H2b does not offer repair or maintenance services. Our value is in rigorous, honest testing and analysis, with a consultation for interpreting results and recommendations for action.

This helps avoid conflicts of interest: diagnostics + recommendations, but not pushing for unneeded maintenance. You get clarity, not pressure.

4. Standardized Sampling

  • Samples should be taken per recognized standards (ASTM D923 or equivalent) to ensure representative fluid samples.
  • TJ|H2b has 11 lab locations worldwide.
  • Also, provide emergency / after-hours consultation if needed.

What is Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM)?

CBM means performing maintenance when the actual condition of the asset indicates it’s needed, rather than strictly on a fixed calendar schedule. Tests, diagnostics, and monitoring inform decisions for transformer maintenance in this instance.

It contrasts with preventive (time-based or usage-based) maintenance and with purely reactive maintenance. With CBM, you avoid unnecessary maintenance when things are fine, and detect and address deteriorations before they lead to failure.

In fact, CBM programs (of which transformer oil diagnostics are a key part) are shown to reduce maintenance costs. For example, predictive / condition‐based programs in some cases deliver 8%–12% savings over scheduled preventive maintenance, and much more compared with reactive maintenance.

How TJ | H2b Uses CBM for Transformer Health

TJ|H2b provides the high-voltage electric power industry with innovative diagnostic and predictive analytical services, enabling clients to optimize maintenance operations with improved reliability and cost-effectiveness.

TCA® evaluations give our customers comprehensive condition assessments that are not always covered by standard practices. After diagnostics, the condition rating informs the sampling/retesting intervals (could be annual, or more frequent or less frequent depending on condition) and identifies remediation if needed.

How Utilities / Asset Managers Can Implement a TCA®-Driven Program

  • Inventory & Risk Prioritization: Identify critical transformers (age, load, location, history).
  • Baseline Diagnostics: Run TCA® on all units (or at least high-priority ones) to establish baseline health rating.
  • Define Condition Thresholds: Decide what condition ratings trigger action, which define retest intervals, etc.
  • Integrate in Asset Management: Feed diagnostics data into an asset management system/decision framework so maintenance is scheduled based on real conditions.
  • Continual Monitoring & Trend Analysis: Over the years, track degradation trends.
  • Ensure Sampling & Testing Standards: High-quality fluid samples, reliable testing labs, consistent methodology.

Getting the Most from Transformer Condition Assessment®

Transformers are expensive, critical, and sometimes overlooked assets. But with the right diagnostic tools and a condition-based maintenance mindset, you can shift from firefighting to foresight.

TJ|H2b’s TCA® program embodies that approach: comprehensive diagnostics, rigorous testing, honest and independent analysis, and helping clients act before failure—not after.

Unlocking transformer health isn’t just about avoiding failure—it’s about optimizing performance, minimizing total cost, ensuring grid reliability, and extending asset life. With TCA®, that’s exactly what operators get.

FAQs

Q1. What distinguishes TCA® from basic oil testing?

TCA® is more comprehensive. It doesn’t just test oil for a few parameters; it combines dissolved gas analysis, fluid quality, degree of polymerization, particle analysis, equipment and maintenance specifics, and more. Plus, the results are turned into a condition rating and actionable recommendations, rather than just pass/fail values.

Q2. How often should a transformer be tested under TCA®?

There’s no one-size-fits-all schedule. TJ|H2b recommends sampling intervals from “immediately” up to annually, depending on a transformer’s condition. If diagnostic results indicate serious issues, more frequent monitoring or remedial action is warranted.

Q3. Can TCA® help predict the remaining life of a transformer?

TCA® provides indicators (like degree of polymerization, oil condition, diagnostics of abnormal gases or particles) that help estimate aging and remaining effective life. While exact lifespan depends on many factors, TCA® gives much better insight than simple age or time in service alone.

Q4. What kinds of issues can TCA® detect that might otherwise be missed?

Examples include early insulation paper degradation, water in oil, acidification, oil contamination, overheating hotspots, particles/sediment that indicate internal wear or damage, and abnormal gas formation that presages electrical or thermal faults.

Q5. Is TCA® expensive compared to preventive maintenance?

There is a cost to diagnostics, sampling, lab processing, and analysis. But compared to the costs of failures, unplanned downtime, emergency repairs, or replacing a failed transformer, the ROI from TCA® in a properly managed CBM program is frequently positive. Savings on maintenance, reduced failures, and extended asset life help offset the costs.

Q6. Can TCA® be used on all oil-insulated transformers?

Yes — TCA® is designed for oil-insulated transformers of any size. However, for very small or less critical units, the cost/benefit may suggest simpler monitoring or less frequent sampling.
